How did you quit smoking ?

I smoke Capri 120 Menthol cigarettes, about a pack a day. I would like to try quitting through methods at home before going to the doctor and trying the medication route. I am 33 and quit for 6 years in December 2000, but severely stressful personal situations arose and I started again. Back then, I quit via sheer willpower, but it seems much harder to quit this time around. What method (s) did you use to finally kick the habit ?

I smoked for 40 years , 2 packs a day, I went to Wal-Mart and bought me some plastic tooth picks (white ones in a plastic case) , I carried them in my shirt pocket just like they were a pack of cigarettes and every time I wanted a smoke I would reach up to my shirt pocket and take one out and put one in my mouth and chew on it.
It helped with my nerves and it gave me something to do with my hands and I had something in my mouth to take the place of the cigarette.

I have not smoked a cigarette since.

Well, I understand perfectly! I had smoked for over twenty five years and my whole life seemed to fall apart and I turned to God and received Jesus into my life, as my saviour and Lord. Into being a christian for about a year I was really convicted that it was not right nor healthy and a bad witness. I had known it was not healthy, But I had a stupid saying about things I WANTED to do. Well if I die at least I will die happy! Garbage!
Anyway to make a long story short, the scripture came to my mind, "call on the name of the Lord, and you will be saved" so I Yelled as loud as I could . "JESUS"!! and I was
DELIVERED!. Now it did not mean that I was not tempted because the enemy of our souls "the devil" does not want us to be saved, healthy, or serving the Lord. But every time I would get an urge I would just start praising God in my heavenly language to God and it would pass, or I would pick up the bible and read some blessing out loud and it would pass. This lasted for about a couple of months off and on and then I was free. Really strange I would get the urge if someone lit a match, and I smelled the sulphur, really stupid because I never used matches to light up, I used a lighter. So I know it was the devil trying to entice me in what ever way he could, but he did not succeed no mattter what he tried to bring across my path.
The reason it is harder to quit after giving in is the devil knows what pushes your button and will create things to pressure you. I do not know if you believe this or not, but there are spiritual forces at work.
I have a friend who has quit several times and of course the same happened to him, and then he just gave up, and is still smoking and this has been over 20 years now and I saw him just the other day and he is still smoking and he does not look good. The tobacco company put in additives to make you crave them.
I have now been free for over 30 years, and simply detest the smell of them.
My Father who has now moved to heaven, about 25 years before was smoking a brand called Buckingham 3 packs a day, which are a very strong blend. He finally made up his mind to quit as everytime he lit one up he would go into fits of coughing. Well he just up and quit but then every time he would get the urge he would grab a peppermint candy, so then he gained weight. So you see there is something lacking in our systems, but he did not go back to smoking.
Now I know today that we can get help by going the natural way. I know some have tried the patch and Nicoderm, but you never hear if they are still not smoking after they said they had stopped.
I do not understand how come after 6 years free you went back. Did you still like the taste of the filthy things?

I used nicotine replacement. Worked for me - after 38 yrs as a dedicated puffer.
Didn't give anything up, gained.
try chew candy as an alternative everytime your are craving to smoke.
Cold Turkey - only way to go.
Try chewing on gum and sucking and tootsie pops.

How deep is a "normal" innie belly button?

It depends on your fitness level. The "harder" the stomach muscles, the shallower the innie. If you are a larger weight class, your innie will be deeper. If you tone up from a large size, your belly button will reflect that tone.

your innie is based on how your parents wraped it when you were born... a deep iniie can go up to 1 inch, though an AVERAGE innie would be only as far as the 1st bend on your index finger when you stick your finger in there!!

How could i eat food healthily?

I am in a resident of university that do not have a kitchen,so i have to buy food in the supermarket.
I awalys buy sandwich ,hamburger and chicken wings.
I think they are not good for my health.
I want to eat some healthy food which have vegetable and the taste is not bad.
Another thing is i do not want to drink cole ,i think it is horrible.

You can always rely on just the produce section.Walk down the aisles and picked what looks good to your eye. Say choose 4 different ones red, green, yellow, and orange. No matter what it is you can wash it rinse it well and peel it if necessary and chop it up and place it in a pan that has had a tablespoon of olive oil in it. turn stove onto med heat and "stir fry" what you have cut up. Add garlic or onions or both. Buy a head of lettuce preferably a dark green one and make a simple salad of that and a sliced tomato. drizzle with olive oil. Your taste buds will learn to appreciate the simple flavors after about 2 weeks and you will no longer crave burger etc. As for drinks I rely upon green tea (hot or iced) water, coffee and juices. take it easy on juices unless they are fresh squeezed and have no sugar added. Desserts can alway be fresh fruit. if you feel you need protein you can cook yourself some dried beans- buy a package and follow the instructions they are easy! Or have fresh fish broiled once or twice a week. Have fun and invite friend.
drink water with a slice of lemon or lime its cheap why dont you make wraps instead of buying sandwiches you know whats going int hem then make a lot of some thing like chicken curry or mousaka and freeze it it will then do you for the week put grated carrot in your bolognaise mushrooms go to an independant green grocer you will find that they are more likely to give discounts etc mashed potatoe with turnip peppers can go in any thing so can tomatoes if you have a cooking hour once a week you could do all your meals then just freeze them you will save a fortune believe me i have been there i used to freeze all sorts your friends will take the mickey but mine did after a fortnight they were coming round scrounging cos i had a freezer full of healthy food and they had frozen sausages and moldy bread

If you are sensitive to them yes- cause weakness and rashes. Plenty of alternatives exist- Nature's Gate and Jason products.
Same with ammonia being in most shampoos and body washes and even expensive soaps!

How common is it that a food allergy causes cough and runny nose?

My 4 year old daughter has suffered with middle ear infections from day one and also has suffered with post nasal drip induced cough which then they say turned into asthma. Her ear nose and throat specialist thinks it could be a food allergy causing all these symptoms but she only gets the cough from Oct. till May or June all summer she does not cough a bit. She did test positive for mold and is going thruo with imunotherepy for it. Any suggestions or links that could be helpful? I really don't want to have her tested for food if it is not the reason for her being misserable. HELP please

Here are some links that I hope will be helpful. I've never known a food allergy to cause a runny nose or cough but then again you learn something new every day. Two of my children had food allergies but they always got a rash, . One of these two children also had childhood asthma which he luckily outgrew. We found out he was allergic to the dog and dust. I would suggest getting her tested for food allergies, then at least you can rule that out. The way they did it with my son was to put a thing with little needles on his arm, then dropped various food/liquid on his arm. Maybe you can ask the doctor to do you first, so that your daughter can watch your reaction, then she won't be so terrified. That's what I did with one of my children and she was fine when doing the tests.Anyways here are the links.

For the same reason that the water in the shower seems to get cooler as you stay in it. Your senses adapt to whats around you and the result is the illusion that the water in the shower is getting cooler or that your poop don't stink!

Because mold is a living thing that creates waste products and those waste products are usually very nasty and not good for you to eat. It's not like they use the bathroom and flush, they just deposit their nasty waste right there wherever they are.

I suppose you could really, besides tastingvery "earthy" or bitter, Were theres mold, theres usually bacteria, helping to break down the decomposing food. It's in cheese and fermented foods. How come whenever i sleep, i twitch or jump?

i see this happening everytime i fall asleep, i fall asleep for awhile and then in the middle of my sleep, i twitch or flintch and jump. its embarssing and i want to know why?

I heard that is you brain sending your body signals to keep all functions running so that you body doesn't go into a vegetable like state. It is also stress if you are hyped up throught the day as your muscles tend to relax your muscles will spasm and twitch as a result. I'm sorry that you are having trouble breathing. I would go to your doctor. Inability to breath while lying down can be a sign of congestive heart failure. It also could be that when you lie down your airway gets blocked. There is an increased association between being overweight and airway problems. You may also have sleep apnea(stop breathing while sleeping) due to the obstruction and not know it.

now that the 12 year olds have answered the question I will provide you with a real answer. The "stuff" that is sometimes in a belly button is just residue. It can be a few things. First, it could be soap that has driend (meaning that you DO was your belly button). It is soap and sweat that makes the smell. When you get out of the shower and you are toweling off clean your belly button with a Q-tip. If this doesn't help or only helps a little then use a Q-tip soaked in hydrogren peroxide to clean out after every shower. Very soon you will have a clean and fresh belly button.

Sometimes, it's a result of obesity but I'm not sure on the chemical reaction of what causes that.

I can only answer for me, but I have two reasons.one, the place is usually too darn big, and I have a heck of a time finding anything in there without going on a marathon trek. Secondly, I prefer buying my items from a local store that sells primarily American made goods rather than Chinese imports, even at a lower price.
Because most people are succeptible to suggestion, and the mainstream media consistently bombards its audience with the idea that walmart is evil. As a teenager, working electronics there was the best part time job I ever held, with the best benefits for someone that age.
I don't care for it because it's loud and crowded, and I don't like that. I prefer to shop at smaller, less crowded stores.
I think the primary issue is that Walmart is so big that it's able to buy products in huge quantities, which give them a lower price and allows them to sell things at a lower cost than local businesses. That may mean it has an unfair advantage, and (allegedly) Walmart is able to run local businesses out of business. On one hand, that's the whole idea behind capitalism, so it's difficult to be critical of this practice.
One possible reason...Walmart does not have a union %26 many people only shop at union stores.
it is a non union orginization and many businesses belong to the union. sometimes people are not allowed to shop at walmart.

How come my eyes don't blink as often as they should when I am wearing glasses?

My eyes always feel tired and dry after I wear glasses for a while. I realized it's because for some strange reasons I don't blink as often as I should when I am wearing my glasses.

I wear contacts too but I blink normally and so glasses are more tiresome to wear for me.

Does anyone know why is that? How can I overcome it?

when your eyes blink it they are tryin to focus i didnt know there was a number on how many blinks you are supposed to do a day also the eye blinks to get rid of the impurities on them..dust..smoke etc my eyes are tired to after wearin glasses and i think that is because they are not used to bein able to see well lol i only wear mine when i drive or am reading something

How come my ears pop ?

my ears have started to pop now and then and has never happened before, why is this?

The eustachian tube goes from the middle ear to the nasoparnyx in the throat. This is how the air pressure is equalized in the middle ear. In adults, the eustachian tube is normally closed and usually opens when a pressure or vacuum occurs in the middle ear. However if you have been sick or have allergy drainage there could be a build up around
the opening of the eustachian tube creating a blockage which will make a popping sound.
This is probably due to pressure in the Eustachian tubes. This is caused by a mucus plug in the tube trapping a columnn of air, between it and the ear drum. The pressure in this colum cannot equalise to atmospheric pressure. When you swallow you push the plug closer to the ear drum, this raises the pressure on the drum and may even cause pain.

How come I get the shakes if I don't eat a snack?

I eat a breakfast and then usually eat lunch about 12:30...I skipped my snack today and now I am totally getting the shakes...what is the deal. If I have a snack I don't get like this but I wasn't hungry so I skipped it. What's the deal...what's going on? Any tips or advice is great thanks!

hypoglycemia...you don't need to have a medical condition in order for you to get the shakes; everyone needs a certain blood sugar level and if you don't eat, it falls, causing fainting spells and sometimes even seizures.
Your blood sugar levels are probably getting too low. Try to eat small, non-sugary snacks throughout the day to help keep your levels from dipping too low between meals.
you could have low blood sugar. But I'm not a doctor. I'd say make an appt. to find out for sure.
Everyone can get jittery when their blood sugar dips. It sounds like you need the snack to keep your sugar level even..If you eat some protein and whole grains for breakfast it will help keep your blood sugar from spiking and dipping so fast. Most cereals are essentially pure sugar so you feel good fast, but they don't last for long. Try peanut butter on whole wheat toast or an egg and oatmeal instead. Also, if you are drinking caffeine on an empty stomach it's going to intensify the jittery feeling.

How come fat people want the medical community to cater to them even though they are fat? How come they get mad and offended if a Dr tells them to lose weight for their own health. After all, thats what a dr is supposed to be doing right? looking after patients health? How come drs get sued for telling a pt to lose weight before he'll do knee replacement surgery or any other surgery? Especially when its in the pts best interest when their weight can cause complications in surgery? Or that fat people just use surgery or medical treatments to fix problems that would be fixed if they just lost weight? I just dont understand.

are you a dr, or why do you care, I understand drs telling you to lose weight and it's for health reasons, but there are some instances when it should be avoided, like after a woman just had a baby and this is the first time seeing a new medical dr, he tells her first thing, you need to lose some weight. That is what happened to me, and I was hurt and offended, I was still caring weight over from the pregnancy. This dr also could tell me to lose weight but was not any help when I asked him how he would reccommend going about it. I was already trying to lose weight and failing no matter what I did. So before a dr offers this advice, he needs to be willing and knowledgeable as to what they can do to lose the weight.

Fat people don't mean to be bad people.
It may be very hard for them to loose weight, and they need professional help sometimes, because some fatnesses come from dramatic stress and stress can make people confort their zone with eating. It is a type of stress and best way to do this, is go to the doctor and accept of the things he/she will say. Then, it is your own way to make yourself love and be loved. Fat or thin, we are all humans.

Take a look at how many more fattening products are sold thanks to those over-consumers. Who wants an unhappy fatty with an equally fat appetite for buying his 'medicines'? Plus there's the human rights issue gone wild... ;-)
I don't expect to be catered to for medical reasons and I am considered to be over weight by about 70 pounds.
* i quite agree with you .if people looked after themselves better they would be far healthier.it is not fair on the doctors or the hospital staff to be expected to lift such heavy people.
I think that obesity is an epidemic that is sweeping the nation, and people don't want to admit they have a weight problem. It must be hard to be that overweight--- people look at you funny, treat you differently and it's hard to find clothes to fit. (I have the same problem being short-- except for the weird looks).

I think that rather than wanting to work to lose the weight, a lot of overweight people want a fast fix (like gastric bypass) rather than working out and doing what they can on their own.

I don't know about suing the doctor over encouragement for weight loss. I'm not too overweight, just slightly, and my doc wants me to lose a few pounds to stay healthy-- it makes me happy to know that she cares!

Being overweight is not necessarily by choice or poor diet, genetics can also be an issue. And when genetics is an issue, it is exremely difficult to lose weight. It can be very difficult to lose weight and to lose a lot of weight you have to change your entire lifestyle and if you do not have the support that is needed it is that much harder. There is no "one fix" or "fast fixes" to losing weight it takes a long time to properly lose weight. Allergies come from anything from dust and dirt, to pets or plants. With my allergies I get sinus headaches that a Bayer aspirin won't help. My nasal cavities get inflamed and my eyes either hurt or they itch. Usually my T-zone hurts a lot. I also get a little fluid in my ears. Mine turn into upper respiratory infections or rhinitis. Some people take Claritin for the sneezing. I also cough at night. Nothing works but Robitussin cough drops with the Honey Center. There is also a cough medicine the VA gives me with Guifenisin and Dextramethorphan. My nose runs too.
The most important thing is that both will cause a fever when full blown. The fever will cause irritability and discomfort.

My stomach has been very weird since I was stationed in VA.
I saw a show about Celiac Disease and swore up and down that I was going through the same things.

I am always tired, I have constipation/diarrhea in alternation, sometimes I'm bloated, my allergies change (one minute I'm allergic to wheat and can eat dairy and then I am lactose intolerant and can eat wheat), my body really shuts down at times,...

It's not so bad now but I begged my doctor to test me for Celiac and he told me I was overexaggerating and it's just lactose intolerance. I wanted to smack him because I don't even eat a lot of dairy products and I knew it was the wheat doing those things to me. Ironically, some months later, dairy products tore me up but the symptoms weren't the same.

I had a colonoscopy, everything and all my test results came back negative. SO, how can you REALLY tell whether it's IBS or Celiac?

Celiac runs in my family, and most (if not all) of my family members that have it were misdiagnosed. My sister finally realized she had celiac simply by abstaining from wheat for a while. Try it for a few months and see if it helps. If you still feel this way, then you probably don't have Celiac. Another possibility is that you have an allergy to both gluten and dairy. If this is the case, then sometimes you might react more to one or the other depending on your diet for that week. For instance, if you are allergic to gluten or dairy (or both), you might be able to eat one or the other for weeks before it builds up in your system and then seemingly randomly affects you. This is one reason why it so hard to diagnose. Hope this helps.
Have an endoscopy. They go in and take a biopsy of your stomach lining. That's the only way to know for sure if it is celiac disease.
If you are using DOD insurance see if your GP will give you a reference to a gastroenterologist (good luck last I recall DOD Dr.'s were a pain in the *** to deal with).

Hopefully you have a PPO and free choice. Go to the gastro tell them the symptoms and concerns and get their opinion. Ask about IBS, Celiac, Crohn's Disease, ileitis, ulcerative colitis as well.

Having Crohn's myself I can fully understand the concerns and annoyances that you are going through right now and the great frustrations.

Definitely check out a gastroenterologist though and get their opinion since this is the kind of thing they went to school for and not a generalized medical degree.

Celiacs is a gluten intolerence. Eat a sandwich made of white bread if you don't go to the bathroom it is probably celiacs and if you do it is probably IBS. Celiacs may cause someone to have bowel movements shortly after eating products that contain Gluten. I am anemic, I bruise easily, my wounds take a lot longer to heal than a normally healthy person would take. Going to the doctor will not make anything different, only a cost to the clinic.

I passed this trait onto my children, somewhat. They bruise easily, heal slowly, etc. Iron seems to help, I try to make them eat cereals that are high in iron, but the bruising comes naturally. It is not debillitating, in that we can't function normally, it just means we hurt more easily than (I would guess,) normally.

Here is something you can do. Sit in a comfortable chair in a quiet room. Notice your breath. Inhale into your belly and exhale slowly. Soften the muscles in your face. Let your fingers curl into your palms. Keep breathing into your belly. On the 10th inhale, hold your breath in for 2 counts, and exhale for 4 counts. If your stomach still hurts, you have indegestion and it isn't just anxiety.

How can you prevent a dirty, marijuana, drug test?

My friend is applying for a job that requires a pee test to see if you have taken any drugs. She recently tried marijuana and fears a dirty test.

She heard it could take between 4-6 weeks to clear. And she did it about a week ago and her test is coming up shortly. What can she do to prevent it from showing up.

Get a detox kit from your local health food store, follow the directions, and you should be fine. they may detect the "flush kit" however, but your friend will have to do another one if that happens, simply use another flush kit for your second test. The test if a flush kit is used may come up inconclusive, don't panic, just use another flush kit for your second test, and it will be consistent with your first test, so they will pass you. They are not allowed to assume anything, so if they ask about detox, just play dumb and say you eat healthy and drink lots of water, if they ask for a third test, say I would like to see a doctor for a professional opinion, and tell your doctor you were at a party where some people were smoking it, and you feared that the second hand smoke may have gotten into your system.

I am a Rehab major with a Addictions minor. There's a lot of false info out there on this subject. The general rule is it takes 28 days for weed to get out of your system. But that's not always the case. It depends on your fat content, how much you drink, and your metabolism. There are herbal detox drinks you can buy online or at head shops but I dunno how effective they are. The best advice is drink a lot of water and pray. It might be out of her system or not.

Weight lifting, I am serious. I was in weight lifting class in high school and I gained 13 lbs of lean muscle, in only about 3 months. Most of my muscle was gained in my lower body, because I don't want a manly body, or pectoral muscles. I just did back/front squats,dead lifts, also calf extension and a lot more. It's also important to get a lot of protein in your diet, protein helps you build muscle quicker. You also need carbohydrates.

You mostly need to weight-lift to build muscle. Running builds your heart muscle but is mostly endurance training for your body (very good for you) but isn't going to hulk you up. Look at all the scrawny runners. They sure can run though.

It takes a lot of self discipline. You need to watch what you eat and constantly work on improving each muscle you focus on, keeping up with a steady weekly workout will continue to burn the fat off and replace it with lean muscular tissue, and as a result all your hard work is shown from how much effort you put into it.

How can we safely dispose of unused prescription medications?

The pharmacy won't take them back. We had been flushing them, but this is very bad for the environment, not to mention impossible to filter out of the waer system. The above poster's argument of "stop buying their products" is flawed because it does not take into account the fact that HFCS is in almost everything we consume as a sugar substitute. I'm in Costa Rica right now doing a study abroad program and have to say that I've lost a pretty good amount despite not increasing exercise or dramatically changing my diet. The only difference that I see is that everything here uses sugar rather than HFCS.

If you want to get food manufacturers to stop using HFCS do not just write them, write your representatives and senators. The only reason it exists in the quantities that we see is because corn is heavily subsidized by the government. If the corn subsidies are adjusted to not include HFCS or if sugar's subsidy is expanded, then the use of HFCS would rationally decline.

If you have a lot of bites, it might be a good idea to take a dose of antihistimine; benedryl is a good over-the-counter choice for bug-bites. You will not like this answer but it is the true one. As the other poster said and also an ear/nose/throat specialist told me, take your mind off it. Something is on your mind enough to have you itching your ears. The problem is, once you start, then you have aggravated the ear lining and it itches all the more! You have to remind yourself every time you start to go for the ear to stop! It is hard at first. Have your friends/family remind you. They can actually swell closed if there is too much trauma from itching. Wear socks on your hands at night until the itching is under control. When it is under control, you will not feel the wetness and itching anymore. Good Luck!

How can I stop sitting on sunglasses?

busted another pair. Luckily these ones were not expensive but I have busted some good ones too.
Answer:
Make yourself a rule not to put sunglasses below waist height - that way you eliminate the chance of sitting on them. Or keep your sunglasses in a hard case so if you do sit on them you will do less damage. good luck :o)
watch where you put your glasses and also watch where you sit. and if you know that you are very prone to breaking them than dont buy expensive ones, you wont feel so bad breaking a cheap pair.

Best thing would be keep your glasses on top of your head whenever you don't need them.
I don't know I can't stop doing myself either, I put them down and forget or don't relize I put them down and then there go's another pair. All I can do now is buy the cheap ones as much as I break/Loose them

you need to find some structure. Something thing to enable you to find the need to organize your life. it will be hard. and difficult at times. only you will make it worthwhile

Lol I do this too. Just try and think of your task as being easy, and you can actually finish it, and it is cool. Then finish it.
Most procrastinators get overwhelmed by looking at the enormity of a project, then don't do ANYTHING rather than deal with their anxiety.
Break up a project into smaller parts, and set a schedule on when you should be getting to each part.
By dividing up something into smaller bites, you can get the satisfaction of finishing one part (like the first 10 questions out of 40 in your homework) and reward yourself with a break on the Internet.
Just keep to your schedule and you'll start breaking the bad habits that built up over time.
